Why Travelling Overseas is Great for Your Relationship

Going overseas as a twosome is exciting, especially if it’s your first time travelling together. You get to spend every waking moment with each other, with no distractions or obligations from work, friends or family – finally, it’s just the two of you.

Some moments will be just what you needed (R&R), and others will be a steep learning curve (discovering a weird bathroom habit), but don’t let that scare you – seasoned couples have the same frustrations!

Travelling overseas with your partner is one of the best things you can do for your relationship. Here’s why.

You’re not checking your social media 24/7. Social media and technology, in general, are massive contributors to relationship lulls (and sometimes dramas), but it becomes less of a problem when you go on holidays. With limited access to wifi, you won’t be checking Instagram every 5 minutes and he won’t be playing that online game anymore – success!

It puts you out of your comfort zone. The only way anyone grows is to embrace new experiences and do things that we’d ordinarily say no to. Getting out of your comfort zone forces you to rely on each other for support and encouragement, which ultimately strengthens you as a couple.

You learn patience. Lost passports, missed flights and food poisoning can all happen while travelling, and every one of these circumstances will test your patience. You will learn your partner’s limits, as well as your own – but this is a good thing! Nobody is perfect, and the sooner you know how to read them (and vice versa), the easier it will be to communicate in the future.

It’s a chance to reconnect. We all need a break from the busyness of everyday life. It’s easy to slip into the routine of waking up, going to work, eating dinner, going to bed, repeat – without ever truly connecting with your partner. Holidays encourage you to talk, touch and relax, so you can reconnect again.

You have to work together to problem solve. Much like putting IKEA furniture together, travelling is full of problem-solving. When you get lost in a foreign city and you can’t speak the language, how do you get back to your hotel? If you can work well together under pressure now, it’s a good indication that you’ll be a strong team back home.

You’re making new memories. Some of the best memories made during a relationship happen when we’re away from the norm and just living in the moment. Every photo you take will have a story with it – some will make you laugh and others will do the opposite – but it’s your story, and no one else can write it the same way.
