What better way to celebrate Earth Day (April 22nd) than to get greener in the bedroom?
Some might remember Greenpeace's words of encouragement for making greener sex choices like opting for lights-off sex and sharing a shower, but what about the toys you are using?
Growing concern around the plastics we surround ourselves with has led to innovation and legislation regulating the contents and components of the toys we let our kids play with. But what about the toys we play with?
Eco-sex activists have been lobbying governments to ban toxins in these kinds of products, but legislation has yet to be passed. In the meantime, there are certain features you should look for in order to find the greenest toys on the market.
We-Vibe, the Canadian Couple's Vibrator manufacturer is one such company leading the charge of the eco-erotic movement.

"Making eco-decisions in our production has been a priority since day one. As we continue to evolve and grow as a company, these kinds of choices continue to be a pillar of our mission. We comply with the strictest consumer safety and environmental standards and take pride in calling ourselves a carbon neutral manufacturer." We-Vibe CEO and founder, Bruce Murison
As an advocate of incorporating your eco-conscience into the bedroom, Murison offers these tips for buying the greenest toys:
- Look for sex toys made of 100% medical grade silicone. This safe, durable material does not release harmful chemicals and will not support microbial growth.
- Look for sex toys that are lead-free, phthalate-free and RoHS and WEEE compliant.
- Beware of toys that contain those kinds of toxins, which have been linked to lowered testosterone levels and some cancers.
- Choose a manufacturer that is carbon-neutral and participates in off-setting programs. Any product’s website should have its environmental specifications outlined.
- Look for products that are powered with rechargeable batteries and high efficiency chargers to ensure the longest life for your toy and the fewest number of disposable batteries in landfills.
- Look for eco-friendly packaging that uses recyclable materials and water-based.
Proudly compliant with all of these specifications, Bruce repeats his mantra this Earth Day 'Please think green' and remember to have fun while doing it."
